Do We Always Need a Label? Navigating Bisexuality Beyond Definitions

Labels can be empowering—they help us find our people, articulate our desires, and feel seen. But what happens when labels start to feel like limitations instead of liberation?

As bisexuals, many of us have experienced the pressure to “pick a side” or define our sexuality in a way that others can easily understand. “Are you more into men or women?” “So you’re actually pan, right?” “If you’re monogamous now, are you still bi?” These questions often come from a place of curiosity, but they can be exhausting.

Sometimes, even within the LGBTQ+ community, there’s an expectation to present a clear, unshakable identity. But bisexuality often defies binary thinking. It’s fluid, dynamic, and deeply personal. For some, a bisexual label feels just right. For others, it’s too small—or too loaded.

I’ve gone through phases where I clung tightly to the word bisexual as a source of pride and community. At other times, I didn’t want any label at all. What mattered most was the freedom to feel, to love, and to explore without explaining myself to everyone.

Labels can be tools. They’re helpful when they serve us—and it’s okay to let them go when they don’t.

At BiFiles, we welcome bisexuals of all experiences—those who proudly wear the label and those who don’t. Let’s talk about it.
